What if there was no such thing as good or evil? Where would you find yourself? Today it is believed that everyone is born with the least amount of evil in them. In Victorian times, this theory would have been considered very wrong, because one would be either all good, or all bad. In Bram Stoker's Dracula, good versus evil is symbolized throughout the book as two antithetical forces with no middle ground. Clearly demonstrating the relationship between dualistic ideas of intuition versus logic, good characters facing figures comparable to the devil, and symbolism within the natural world, Bram Stoker effectively chronicles a "holy war" between the antagonistic forces of good and evil. good and bad were seen in the whole aspect of intuition versus logic in the book. Dr. Seward writes in his diary that “yesterday [he] was almost willing to accept the monstrous ideas of Van Helsing; but now they seem scandalous in my eyes, like outrages against common sense. I have no doubt that he believes everything. I wonder if his mind may have become somewhat deranged. Surely there must be a rational explanation for all these mysterious things. (174). In the Victorian era, logic was perceived as good, while intuition was evil and immoral. Dr. Seward writes how he was initially convinced that Lucy was, in fact, a vampire, but later thinks these ideas are outlandish. He is unwilling to accept Van Helsing's intuition because his thoughts could not be justified by logic, but could simply be proven by beliefs. Similarly, Jonathan has initial feelings towards Dracula that he was convinced were wrong because they were not rational thoughts. He writes that "there is something so strange about this place and everything that [he] can't help but feel uneasy." (2...... middle of paper ...... l. After discovering this, Van Helsing, Doctor Seward, Quincey and Arthur hunted her down and killed the evil soul who had taken possession of her body. She then truly dies and is left in her natural, human state. Furthermore, Jonathan facing Dracula is another example of good versus evil, as seen when Jonathan writes that “when the Count saw [her] face, the His eyes shone with a sort of demonic fury, and suddenly he reached for [his] throat [Jonathan] moved away and [the Count's] hand touched the string of beads holding the crucifix. He could only protect himself by possessing objects. religious, of which the Count, a demonic character, was afraid. Good and evil were also demonstrated through the relationship between kind and purely good characters opposed to evil characters.
