Topic > Comparison of The Eyewitness Story by Jack London...

vs.Compare and contrastThere are some similarities and differences between 「The Eyewitness Story」 written by Jack London and 「Leaving Desire」 by Jon Lee Anderson. These elements lead to the same topic, the escalating grief over the extreme damage caused to residents by the natural disaster. However, the main method of approaching the topic is completely opposite. Jack London wrote the story by looking at the whole city and describing the general situation. On the other hand, Jon Lee Anderson highlights how natural disaster ruined an individual's life. The four elements I will compare and contrast are the type of disaster, the setting, the atmosphere, and the writing style. But first, let me briefly introduce the summary of two essays.「An Eyewitness Story」is an account by Jack London of the catastrophe that struck San Francisco. The two disasters damaged the city which was set on fire and hit by an earthquake. The fire was aided by the earthquake which struck for just 30 seconds. While Jack London was writing the report, the fire continued and the city was described as destroyed by repeating the word "blown away". Fortunately, after the fire was over, people were able to prevent the fire and finally rebuilt the city. To sum up the doomed city in one sentence, the city was a wall of flames.「Leaving Desire」written by the author, Jon Lee Anderson is a story with a main character who is Lionel Petrie. Petrie shows the longing a man can feel by insisting on not leaving San Francisco saying that his family will return to his home to find him. Unfortunately, San Francisco was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina. There was sewage,......half of paper...... As I said, 「Eyewitness Story」 is in chronological order while 「Leaving Desire」 has a lot of flashbacks. To sum up, the comparison between these two stories, 「An Eyewitness Story」 and 「Leaving Desire」 led me to understand the stories more deeply. The type of disaster, the setting, the atmosphere and the writing style. The four elements correspond while some parts differ. However, as I repeat, they all lead to the same argument. The horror of the disaster may be nothing. The pain of death, loss and many things that cannot be put into words penetrate the heart, telling us how terrible calamities are. In other words, disasters should be kept to a minimum. I hope not many people feel the angst that could be found in 「The Eyewitness Story」 and 「Leaving Desire」 in the future.
