Voter suppression is no surprise in American government. Most of the public doesn't notice, otherwise they realize voter suppression after the damage has already been done. College students are an easy target considering many students don't know as much as they should know about the American government and its voting process. Why and how are college students victims of voter suppression, and what are the tactics used? It is unfair and wrong for political parties, or their affiliates, to subtly find ways to prevent college students from voting. This political manipulation could call into question the government's ability to remain true to its true purpose, which is to establish a government for the people and by the people. Candidates are allowed to discuss their policies for OUR government, but look back and try to maintain certain demographics to implement their fair say in the election of our political representatives. Political parties suppress the votes of university students to manipulate the government by ignoring the contributions of young people. The tactics used to suppress college students from voting do not physically prevent them from voting, but are used by creating new laws that would prevent their ballot from being cast. According to the Huffington Post, North Carolina college students are victims of voter suppression tactics. The parties have implemented ID laws that do not recognize college IDs as a valid form of identification, nor can out-of-state students vote without a valid North Carolina ID. These tactics may be used because 13.7% of college students are out of state and will most likely not acquire a North Carolina ID. Additionally, in North Carolina, the polling places were strategically more… half paper. .....and minorities are on the rise in the American population. As for college students as a whole, there is a huge increase in liberal ideology in the 18 to 25 year old demographic. According to a 2012 Quinnipiac University poll, 67 percent of people ages 18 to 29 support legalizing marijuana and 63 percent support same-sex marriage. Republicans have eliminated or shortened early/absentee voting simply because it is primarily used by Democratic supporters. Republicans have a clear reason to attempt to suppress student voters, most likely because they fear losing their position within government and will undoubtedly seek to repress groups with new liberal ideologies. The country, as a whole, must push for a change in the gubernatorial electoral process in which elites do not manipulate the very foundations on which our country is built..
