The submarine has seen many incarnations over the past few centuries. Its technology has seen tremendous innovation and has been extremely revolutionary since its conception in the Renaissance era. Although initially developed as a simple method of underwater exploration, it transformed over time into one of the most powerful weapons of war ever. The concept of submarine technology had humble origins with the use of simple diving bells, but in the centuries to come we would see the development of a number of different submarines, from simple wooden boats to the nuclear fleets of today. The diving bell could be considered one of the most primitive types of technology in the wake of the submarine. The diving bell was an enclosed structure that retained air when submerged underwater allowing people to enter and submerge themselves. One of the first accounts of this technology was described by Aristotle in the 4th century BC. Of the diving bell he writes: "they allow divers to breathe just as well by lowering a cauldron, since this does not fill with water, but retains the air, since it is pushed directly into the water."<1> While the idea of the diving bell was conceived more than two thousand years ago and it was only in the Renaissance era that more sophisticated designs for underwater vessels began to be developed. During the era, many physicists and inventors such as Guido da Vigevano and Roberto Valturio developed submarine technology projects. These plans, however, never materialized. It was not until 1578 that detailed plans were made to produce a vehicle capable of navigating underwater. The Englishman William Bourne designed a prototype for what today we would call a submarine and published the plans in his book Inventions or Devi...... middle of paper ......engines powered by ar However, there continue to be constant innovations in the speed and endurance of today's boats. For example, the largest Russian Typhoon-class submarines ever made with a length of 175 meters and can stay submerged for three months.<22> The military interest that the submarine has received since the late 19th century quickly innovated the invention bringing it to its modern form. Nowadays smaller modern submarines are also used for civilian purposes. For example, many scientists would use small two- or three-person boats during underwater explorations. Submarines are now also used for entertainment purposes by resorts and other similar companies to take tourists on diving excursions. Submarine technology is now accessible to all of us in various ways, but it also continues to be innovated with new improvements in the power of these vessels made every year.
