Topic > Law Against Law in Sophocles' Antigone - 1085

The German philosopher Hegel stated that Sophocles' play Antigone represents the tragic collision of law against law, with both sides equally justified. The show begins with tragedy and ends the same way. Polyneices and Eteocles were brothers who killed each other in the struggle for power over the throne. Creon, the brothers' uncle, was the next member of the family to occupy the throne. But he didn't want the same pattern to repeat itself. For this reason he created a decree that punished all those who had committed a crime before dying. These people, in turn, would have been overlooked by the burial ceremony. Eteocles was recognized as the defender of the city and with great dignity he was given all the rights of death in his burial. In contrast, his brother Polyneices was overlooked during his death ceremony because he was accused of attacking the city of Thebes. Creon's perspective was that if he betrayed his own decree there would once again be anarchy and chaos in Thebes. Then there was Antigone, a wise young woman, fiancée of Creon's son and sister of Polyneices and Eteocles. Antigone had a deeper understanding of the superior and immutable morality of behavior than misbehavior. Antigone would rather be civilly disobedient than suffer for the unburied dead. In the same environment two completely different points of view seem to coexist. In the play Antigone, the clash of dialectical ideas of justice is seen through the different lenses of Antigone and Creon. Of course, Creon's decisions were based on the combination of many events. When his decree was first established, he refused to give ground. As a result, he ignores the Gods' logical ritual for burying the dead. In Creon's state of mind lived the immutable... middle of paper......rmal. In the play Antigone, the law of man attempts to compete with the ancient law of the gods. In modern American society, a bill must be introduced, sent to a committee, brought back to the floor, debated, voted on, referred to the Senate, sent to the president, and then it becomes a law. Obviously, the process of passing a law is long because there are always many aspects to a situation. And that doesn't mean society is always right. For example, smoking marijuana recreationally is illegal in the United States despite breaking the law, many Americans have done it. To this end, normality is seen through the eyes of the beholder but is filtered through society. Creon's impulsive decree begins with good intentions, to establish justice, but brings him misery. Antigone maintained her actions out of loyalty to family ties and divine laws.
