PortfolioThis assignment is based on my seven-week placement in a Year 3 classroom in East London.Critical Incident 1During one of my first maths lessons at school, I was working with superior children with ability. At this point I had not seen the teachers plan for this lesson or for the term. The lesson was about subtraction using complicated columns. The school uses the Maths Makes Sense scheme, it was the first time I had seen this scheme used. The scheme follows a rigorous wording that must be used throughout children's learning. I did not fully understand or know the precise wording that was to be used. So when one of the children asked me to help them, I felt very uncomfortable and struggled to some extent to explain to her how to complete the sum. Even though I knew the method they were using, it was the wording that suited the method that I couldn't explain to her. The Maths Makes Sense method uses the word cups for ones and tys for tens and does not use the word borrow which would have been the way I had learned. Critical Incident 2 In my second week of placement, the class teacher told me and another trainee that she would be out of the room for 10 minutes after lunch and that we needed to bring the class inside and get them to settle for a mathematics. This was the first time we were left alone in class in this position. I knew the math lesson and the power point was on the computer. After 10 minutes the teacher hadn't returned, so we decided to start the lesson. The teacher was out of class for 40 minutes and when she returned we had already done most of the lesson and she only had a small part left to do. During this time I was very nervous because it was my first whole... half work... skills that come from reflections and learning to progress in a positive way.
