Self-Management Approach at King Fahd University Hospital in Saudi ArabiaThere are many diseases in the world that affect the lives of patients. WOH mentioned that chronic conditions could lead to disability in the future, which leads to spending a lot of money to treat patients (WHO, 2005). The prevalence of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, obesity, overweight and diabetes has become a major cause of concern for the Saudi Arabian government. Furthermore, the number of patients suffering from chronic diseases is increasing. The main reasons for this are that people in Saudi Arabia have a poor lifestyle, unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity (Maheshwari, 2011). To control chronic diseases and prevent patients from getting worse, we must distinguish between chronic diseases and skin diseases. A chronic condition is one that "has been (or is likely to be) present for at least 6 months, or is terminal" (The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners 2000). To cure chronic diseases we must change our lifestyle and we must consider many factors such as the cost of drugs, the availability of drugs, healthcare professionals. Furthermore, all healthcare professionals and patients should be aware of self-management. Many studies have shown that self-management is an important component of the effective management of people with chronic conditions. This is a framework that includes patients, family members and healthcare professionals. The self-management program can improve quality of life by increasing patient information, decreasing hospital admissions and doctor visits, improving patient behaviors, and improving the healthcare system for chronic diseases (Epping-Jordan et al. 2004). Unfortunately, Saudi Arabia does not have any self-management approach to… middle of the paper… which could lead to increasing patient confidence (Self-Management Toolkit 2011). The self-management toolkit shows good communication strategies to improve self-management in patients with chronic diseases involving patients, exploring the ambivalence of the importance and planning of collaborative action (Self-management tools 2011). The good self-model that can be implanted in my service is the Flinders model. The Flinders Model of Chronic Disease Management was developed by Dr. Malcolm Battersby and collaborators at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia. There are many reasons to use the Flinders model. First, it is a patient-centered and easy-to-use care model. Another reason is that it creates a good partnership between healthcare providers and patients where the patient can be the decision maker and the healthcare provider can be the facilitator..
