Qualitative research was conceived as a way to be directly connected to the topics researched. Participating researchers can choose to simply observe and collect data or to be an active participant. Covert participation has the advantage of reducing the “reactive effects” of the social or group context (Bachman & Schutt, 2012). Most researchers who use the participatory research method often find a balance between participation and observation. Through participation, an observer can gain the trust of research subjects who can provide more fruitful results. However, some searches may be unethical or violate the law. A good researcher should use caution in advance when designing their research project. Systematic social observation (SSO) is an observational science method that relies on field research to better record, study and understand police work. SSO relies on setting fixed parameters and variables to allow for a more standardized form of observation (Bachman & Schutt, 2012). In order to follow a systematic approach, observers, usually students, are pre-selected based on their ability to record information that is both reliable and
