Naturalism in this sense refers to "a communicative strategy that seeks to obscure the articulatory apparatus used in the production of a message", meaning that it mainly focuses on the fading of the notion of a photographer from the viewer's point of view. This concept seems a bit abstract at first, but it is extremely widespread, especially in spot news. In Figure 1, naturalism is created by the photographer through the use of a variety of methods, but primarily through the choice of angle. While a photographer might be interested in capturing the faces of the revelers, he or she chooses to tilt the camera away from the direction of their faces and point it towards the fireworks instead. This creates the illusion that the viewer is in the crowd, engulfed in confusion as they stare at the fireworks. This perspective can also be used to instill in the reader the emotions and opinions captured in the image. In a way, it can be said that the photographer was trying to make the viewer agree with the views of the Egyptians in the photo.
