During a brief moment when Monks and Fagin meet and loudly discuss their little secret, they are overheard by Nancy, who runs away to warn Rose Maylie and Mr. Brownlow of the betrayal. The three eventually have secret meetings to discuss how to save Oliver before being discovered by Noah Claypole, who passes the information on to Fagin. Soon after Nancy is murdered by Bill Sykes. After this, following the death of Bill Sykes and the arrest and hanging of Fagin, Monks is forced to give up his secrets and his fortune.
