The question of stricter gun control laws is an ongoing battle that continues to be debated on both the local and federal levels. Regardless of one's point of view on the issue, this topic constitutes a very passionate debate on both sides. The question is whether or not stricter laws and regulations help reduce the number of gun-related crimes. Obviously, responses vary greatly depending on the view strongly held by those who responded. Often, horrific gun crimes are committed by people who do not value human life, which results in mental problems. In these cases, it makes no difference how many laws are on the books, because if a mentally deranged person is determined to get a gun to carry out his plan, a gun is what he will get. When individuals decide to use a gun to commit a crime, they will find a way to protect the gun, legally or illegally. The saying comes to mind: “Where there's a will there's a way.” Therefore, implementing stricter gun laws and reducing the number of gun permits issued would, in most cases, have a negative effect on good, law-abiding citizens. It is this group that could fall prey to the criminal who will own and use a weapon regardless of what he or she has to do to obtain it. In situations where a good citizen becomes the intended or unintended victim and comes face to face with an individual with criminal intent, a gun would be a much greater deterrent than trying to rationalize with the criminal.
