As seen in monogatari examples such as Tales of Ise or Nikki with The Tosa Diary, poetry is a widely used tool in writing. While other examples of the two writing styles utilize poetry, these two examples best demonstrate the breaks in the writing style as it changes from narrative and morphs into something that takes on a more personal voice as it clearly enters its poetic style. These poems are crafted to complement the setting, as in a poem attributed to the former governor in The Tosa Diary where there is a description of the waves as they illustrate the governor's sadness as he leaves Kyoto (83). Another point seen from this poem is that the governor should be very good at constructing his poems and with it comes an example of a good poem as opposed to something a commoner should write. Similarly, in the tenth of the Tales of Ise there are poems that describe the love a man has for a woman while also confronting the physical environment, such as mountains. There are comparisons to Mount Fuji and Mount Utsu as they respectively represent the waiting for his love or the beautiful vision that man sees in his dreams with his love (75-6). Such scenery images seen alongside the wishes or longing of those who write the poems are examples of how poems are used to strengthen narrative prose. Without the poems, the prose narrative in both monogatari and nikki would simply be a story and the meaning would be reduced as there would be no personal impact emanating from the characters and their feelings as a reader would only be able to read the description of the events and have no insight into the thoughts of any of the characters. The significance lies in the possibility that with the different types of poetry in the narrative, the governor presents examples of the types of poems that should be written by different people from different classes. Looking back at the narratives and the meaning of the poems in their is that many of the poems are inspired by the nature that surrounds the authors. Additionally, poems provide more of the authors' voice instead of just the narrator's voice and help introduce the reader to the emotional tones of the characters in the narratives so that there can be a greater connection with it when it is told. The poems are a simple addition to the narrative and allow for a much more meaningful experience for the reader and create a much more compelling story, thus adding to the experience as a whole.
