This is the fifth phase. This stage occurs from ages 12 to 18. In this phase the adolescent will try to understand who he is and who he will become. They might try different things and different tendencies. Erikson believed that this needs to happen in order to have a sense of identity and where they want to be in the world and in the future. They will try to fit in with the rest of the world and if they feel they can't, they will. become confused and insecure. Erikson also believed that teenagers who do not receive the right support and/or encouragement will lower their self-esteem, confidence, be unsure of who they are, and not know where they are going in life. However, teenagers who receive the right support/encouragement will have a feeling of independence and self-control. The next stage is intimacy versus isolation.
