The appearance of something is almost always the opposite of what it is in reality. In this period masks are used everywhere. Masks serve to hide reality and give a different appearance. Appearances can be deceiving and almost always lead you to think something that isn't true. Literature, social media, and pop culture show that people will change themselves to conform to society's expectations. In most literature, masks are used as a device to show appearance rather than reality. The literature shows that people will change themselves to conform to society's expectations. Romeo and Juliet shows that people use masks to hide who they really are. Masks are seen very often in Romeo and Juliet. When Romeo is heartbroken over Rosaline, he compares women's faces to masks. “These happy masks that kiss the foreheads of beautiful ladies, being black, make us think that they hide the beauty” (26). He's saying that the masks women wear make men think about how beautiful they are underneath. Mercutio also uses the term mask when he says, “Give me a case to put my face in! A visor for a visor” (50). Here he is saying give me a mask to put my mask in; that his face is a mask that hides who he really is. When Juliet is on the balcony she talks about how names have nothing to do with who you are. “Romeo, take away your name, and for that name, which is no part of you, take all of myself” (80). Divergent shows that people pretend to be someone different than they really are. At the beginning of the book Tris or Beatrice of the time, she discovers that she is Divergent. Tori, one of the volunteers who performed the aptitude tests, tells Tris this information. “'We shouldn't share our test results. I know." "No. This is different....... middle of paper......Youtuber, has no mask. He lets people know what his opinions are. He kind of hides behind a mask by looking silly for his videos, but in the end he also has a message that shows his true personality. Most of his fans love him for his real personality. This goes to show that sometimes masks aren't necessary for success. Literature, social media, and pop culture show that people change themselves to conform to society's expectations. People use masks to hide who they really are, no matter it is makeup or a fake personality, people will not show their true self. When a person wears a mask, they will become a completely different person, whether it is their true self or a fake personality, appearances can hide the truth and be deceptive. People should show their true selves because eventually you won't have to hide so much of yourself.
