Arms and the ManIn the play Arms and the Man, by Bernard Shaw, Major Sergius Saranoff is certainly one of the most rounded characters. Sergio possesses many distinct characteristics, which distinguish him from the other characters in the play. Many of these qualities were accumulated through his military experience; it is obvious to anyone with this military background from his military uniform and rugged face. Major Saranoff is an extremely important character in the play because of his engagement to Raina, the only daughter of Bulgaria's richest family, the Petkoffs, and because of his highly regarded military status. Sergio is shown to be a well-rounded character as he displays three main qualities throughout the play: courage, spontaneity, and deception. The military has always been a tool where courage can be demonstrated and this was Sergio's way of showing how courageous he was. The Bulgarian army he led consisted mainly of heavy cavalry, which charged a battery of machine guns. This action, in itself, is one of true courage or pure stupidity. Fortunately, the wrong ammunition was sent to the Swiss army and Sergius and his cavalry managed to prevail. From this crazy action two conclusions can be drawn: either Sergio knew that the ammunition was defective or Sergio had decided that they would be massacred anyway and that they would have to risk the charge. In any case, Major Saranoff showed an extremely courageous and courageous act. As shown at the beginning of the first act, all the characters in the play recognize Sergius as a war hero except Bluntschli. “…he led a charge on his own responsibility – he titled it himself – he was the first man to sweep away their weapons” (p.307). Bluntschli saw it as... middle of paper......serious that Catherine is crazy, for two main reasons, first because Sergio has promised to marry Raina, and second because he is choosing a servant instead of Raina. . From the three main qualities that Sergio demonstrates throughout the play, courage, impulsiveness and infidelity, it is shown that he is a well-rounded character. The cause of Sergio's peculiar actions and emotions is not certain, although after going through the near-death phase on the battlefield, Sergio most likely stopped thinking about the worries of the world and certainly did not worry too much about anything. This is the most logical explanation for the cause of this change. Although it is not evident, one has to wonder that, after the emotions shown by Raina towards Sergio during the show, at some point Raina loved him and that this new image of himself changed Raina's opinion of him him..
