Neely offers excellent insights to support the visualization of her passivity along with the self-realization of her true personality portrayed in Shakespeare's work. Although points and opinions are given about how “innocent” she may seem, Desdemona still plays the role of an unwitting damsel. He is a truly kind and loving person, as is demonstrated throughout the play by the way he treats a wide range of people, rich and poor. Her ignorance of hierarchy and rank just shows how passive she is towards her government and how things really worked in that time period. However he continually plays the passive role, his submission comes into play the longer he is with Othello. The severity of Desdemona's submission to Othello can be felt in many different ways. Its effect on his behavior, however, is astonishing. Desdemona is a strong, big-hearted woman who falls outside the realm of normal Shakespearean characteristics. Throughout this play we see that Shakespeare did not want Desdemona to be like all other women, he did not want her to be rebellious and unfaithful. She wanted her to be just as he portrayed her, submissive to her husband and passive towards all things
