The need for an anti-discrimination bill for members of the LGBT community is broad, and discrimination against individuals who identify as LGBT extends far beyond workplace, up to homes and communities. Only 11 states currently provide transgender victims with hate crime protections. In all other states, violent crimes against transgender people are prosecuted without a hate crime enhancement. Transgender people often have difficulty finding work and feeling safe. Due to the employment discrimination faced by most trans people, they may remain unemployed. The National Transgender Discrimination Survey released statistics showing that 26% of transgender people transitioning have lost their jobs due to extreme bias. Not surprisingly, this same bias leads trans people to generate lower income than the national average. The National Transgender Discrimination Survey reports that approximately 15% of all employed transgender people earn less than $10,000 a year, double the national statistic of 7%. The survey showed that transgender people of color face the most income discrimination in the LGBT community with the statistic that 35% of all black transgender people reported earning less than $10,000 per year. According to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, 2012 had the fourth highest number of anti-LGBT murders ever, with a total of 25. Of these crimes, 73 percent of the victims were LGBT people of color, and 53 % of victims were reported as transgender women. While the Equality Act wasn't all-encompassing, it got the right idea of what was needed to help improve the lives of people who are regularly discriminated against. According to civilrights.org, "ENDA is modeled after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, religion, gender, national origin, and color. ENDA works within the confines of the Civil Rights Act to protect a group of people who have historically been and are currently discriminated against.” The fact that ENDA is modeled directly on the Civil Rights Act of 1964 properly validates its case. The LGBT community has always faced discrimination on many levels and protecting these people with the law could help curb much of the hate this community receives..
