Politics in Mexico throughout history has been hostile to say the least. Like many previously authoritarian regimes, Mexico's transition to democracy has been bitterly fought. Even today, the Mexican political system is characterized by political corruption seen through the influence of drug cartels, their corporatism and electoral fraud. It is these characteristics that make Mexico a valuable study for comparative politics. Studying Mexico you see a country that has grown relatively little (due to the characteristics of its political system mentioned above) and is certainly not a democracy. The influence of Mexican drug cartels is widespread throughout Mexico. This influence is evident on an ongoing basis. Many senior Mexican agency officials periodically make global news when they are exposed as being under the leadership of a drug trafficking operation/cartel. Stephen D.
