The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are deceptively sold to the general public as a state-led initiative to reform the current curriculum taught in our public schools. In the standards there are very specific goals that must be achieved by the end of each school year for all grades from kindergarten through twelfth grade. So far the only subjects that have seen any changes are mathematics, reading, writing and literature. The standards are publicized through collaboration between the school, teachers and administration and strong collaboration between feedback groups and the public. This is simply not true. The Common Core State Standards were produced by organizations and companies for their own interests. As a result, students are experiencing privacy violations, states are hemorrhaging money to pay for new costs associated with Common Core assessments, and public education is being taken uncontrollably. According to www.corestandards.org there are two primary organizations coordinating the CCSS: the National Governors Association (NGA) and the Council for Chief Stats School Officers (CCSSO). Further investigation into these two nonprofits revealed some rather surprising and eyebrow-raising truths. In 2009, the National Governors Association released a report outlining the process for developing common English language arts and mathematics standards. Included in this report are the names of the people who served on the working groups for each respective topic. The purpose of the working groups was to determine and write college and career readiness standards (“Commons”). Of the twenty-nine names released showing who participated in the working groups, only two people were not part of an educational company... ... middle of paper ...... exploiting us all and laughing while they do it. The American public is being deceived. On the surface the common core can easily be misunderstood as a benign and benevolent enterprise. There is no doubt that the education system in the United States needs to be reexamined and changed to meet the needs of students. But that's exactly the problem: Instead of educating students and teaching to their needs, teachers are now subjected to teaching to the tests that accompany the standards. How our education system is being shaped and by whom should alarm parents about their children's future. Once again, under the guise of “for children,” a Trojan horse of downright frightening proportions has breached our families and is unleashing its reign of corporate interests. Where data is used to profit from children for corporate use and a man makes the decisions.
