Mathilde had made that mistake by hiding her status. She always wanted to be rich and finally one night she had the chance to do it by looking beautiful at the ball and attracting the attention of everyone present. Mathilde had maintained her rich status and paid the price for her false status by working and paying off her unwanted debts.
