We've already talked about Piggy, so we'll start with Ralph. Ralph was the leader of this story and is the first character introduced: he is a boy of about 14 years old. He wants all the kids to create shelters, find materials, find food, and find a way to be saved. Of all the boys he was the most civilized one capable of preventing everything from going to hell. Piggy was his only real friend, even though he was a little mean to him at first. Their only way to be rescued was to rely on signal fire; Ralph made it his goal to keep the signal fire burning. You can see from start to finish that Ralph changed, not too drastically like the others, but what made him change was that he almost succumbed to the ferocity but then fought against it. Ralph is a protagonist, the story follows the goal of escaping the island and goes through the events on the island as he tries to achieve his goal. Our other central character is Jack. He is about the same age as Ralph, he is a British boy like all the others, and he was made leader of the hunters, and he was also jealous that Ralph was chosen as leader over him. "Okay. Who wants Jack as their leader?" (Golding 23). When Ralph voted for who should be the leader, he asked who Jack wanted to be the leader and only the choir's hands were raised. This is where the jealousy for Jack began. Another character is Simon. Simon may be slightly younger than Ralph and Jack. Simon was a helpful, curious and loyal person towards Ralph. What Simon portrayed in this novel is that he was one of the members of the choir group led by Jack, but he was the only one who would help Ralph build the huts for shelter. He underwent mental changes as he believed the beast was real and that the "Lord of the Flies" spoke to him.
