Computers and information technology appear to be bringing about a change on a scale comparable to that which occurred during the Industrial Revolution, transforming our social, economic and political institutions; our understanding of what it means to be human; and the distribution of power in the world. Some might argue that IT professionals have very little say in what technologies are designed and built. This appears to be wrong for at least two reasons. First, we can distinguish between IT professionals as individuals and IT professionals as a group. Although individuals have little power in the jobs they hold, they can exercise it collectively. Second, individuals can have an impact if they see themselves as professionals and see it as their responsibility to anticipate the impact of their work. IT professionals might claim that they create the technology but that they are not responsible for how it is used. This argument, however, is problematic for a number of reasons and perhaps most importantly because it fails to recognize the potential to solve some of the problems of abuse in the design of the technology. IT professionals are well placed to think about potential problems with computers and to design to avoid these problems. The study of intelligent systems, often called “artificial intelligence” (AI), uses computation as a means to simulate human perception, cognition, reasoning, learning, and action. In the case of artificial intelligence, the first thing that usually comes to mind is that artificial intelligence is convenient for humanity. It makes life a lot easier to have AI systems to do people's jobs. Having AI at your fingertips not only reduces tasks in......middle of paper......terms comes with great potential benefits as well as risks. Information technology will, without a doubt, continue to evolve and continue to influence the character of the world in which we live. Computer scientists and engineers will play an important role in shaping technology. The technologies we use shape how we live and who we are. They make a difference in the moral environment in which we live. Therefore, it seems of the utmost importance that computer scientists and engineers understand how their work affects humans and human values.
