Topic > From swords to plowshares: the social causes of violence

Human beings no longer kill each other like in the past. Violent crimes such as murder, rape, assault, etc. are statistically declining, not only in the United States, but also on the global average. Although we are still far from that ideal utopia dreamed of by humanity, we have come a long way since the days of world wars, rampant racism and the usual inflictions of agony. Did we just get bored of all the looting and raping? Are we realizing now that violence is not the answer but the problem? Or did men like Mahatma Gandhi and women like Arundhati Roy challenge our intellect and lead us to the path of peace? Some political theorists have been so influential in history that their teachings completely change the course of human destiny and are compelling enough to eclipse the monsters we once were and unleash the “better angels of our nature.” The idea of nonviolence has been around as long as violence has existed, but over the years we see the fundamental concepts of nonviolence emerge. It's easy to let frustration get the best of you and destroy the windows of businesses you feel have taken advantage of you. It's easy to justify killing someone by telling yourself it's for the greater good. And it's easy to bomb an entire country back to the Stone Age (which never really passed) in the name of justice. Organizing and protesting against unfair business ethics, tolerating and working with the person who is believed to be the embodiment of the devil, and putting down the sword before the pen is not easy. Nonviolence asks people to adopt the idea that cooperation and peaceful collaboration are human nature, not the evolutionary violence of our caveman ancestors. There is no aspect of our lives, no contested issue, that cannot benefit from the practices of nonviolence.
