Topic > Influential Supreme Court Case: Gideon v. Wainwright

There have been several different Supreme Court cases over the years that have had influence on almost everyone who knows about them. For example, Roe v. Wade was and still is extremely influential and is the cause of pro-life/pro-choice debates. Another important case was Marbury v. Madison, which was the first Supreme Court case to declare a law passed by Congress unconstitutional. While these two cases were among the most important and influential in American history, in my opinion, nothing compares to the influence that the Gideon v. Wainwright case had. This case was extremely important to the way law enforcement is to be implemented as it forced investigators, the FBI and the like to "do their homework" before declaring someone guilty of a crime. Although this case had a lot of influence on how police forces carry out their duties, I think the case was especially important in that it forced all courts in the United States to have greater recognition of the Sixth Amendment to the Constitution and the story of the victim involved in this case.Clarence Earl Gideon was born on August 30, 1910 in the state of Hannibal, Missouri. His father's name was Charles Gideon and his mother's name was Virginia Gideon. In 1913 Charles Gideon died a few days after Clarence's third birthday. Virginia remarried to a man named Marion Frances Anderson when she was five years old. After this second marriage Clarence became the brother of Roy E Ogden, his half-sister and his half-brother named Russell Lee Anderson. Clarence thought his stepfather was a really good man, even though he wasn't educated. This, of course, was the case until Clarence reached the eighth grade of Hannibal's school. His… middle of paper… aims to actually do his job before accusing someone of a crime. Works Cited"Gideon v. Wainwright (No. 155)." legal information institute LII.
