Design can be both the result and the promoter of social change. Despite designer George Nelson's precision in stating that "design is a response to social change," he neglects to mention that it can also trigger it. In contemporary society, all aspects of our environments have been designed for a particular purpose in order to meet certain needs or social changes. It can be theorized that there is an infinite loop between the influence of social change on design and the influence of design on social change. This is evident through the analysis of the projects, the social change that influenced them and the social change that resulted from them. This theory can be highlighted through the analysis of skyscrapers and prisons, as well as the design of the wheel and smartphones, their social influences such as the Industrial Revolution and the Modernist Movement, and their impact. First of all, it is important to recognize that the design incorporates more of the fashion and architecture aspects that many people believe it to be. Design can be seen as part of everything we use and see. Whether it's the park you visit, the building you live in and all the products and furniture, the hospitals, the machinery inside them and pretty much everything we use has been specially designed; not only aesthetically, but also to function as they do. As such, these projects are powerful responses to social change but, as products and projects that we use every day, it stands to reason that they will simultaneously influence social change as well. Skyscrapers are a great example of ways in which design can be both a response to and an instigator of social change. Skyscrapers began in urban areas in the 1880s following the rise of... middle of paper... flowing designs of the time. The social response to the iPhone's design is powerful and undeniable. This example alone provides enough evidence to suggest that while design responds to social change, social change also responds to projects. Ultimately, considering the nature of world-famous projects nowadays; skyscrapers, wheel, prisons and smartphones, we can see that design responds to social change at the same time as social change responds to design. It can be said that both social change and planning depend on each other and therefore form a continuous cycle. Social changes in materials, demands, desires and beliefs on a global scale have all stimulated design as much as skyscrapers, wheels, prisons and smartphones have instigated social change. The analysis and evidence cited made this clear.
