Topic > The influence of mass media - 1062

“Researchers have suggested that the effect of pleasant arousal followed by violence desensitizes viewers to the violence. It not only makes violence more acceptable and exciting, but also, one might argue, more enjoyable” (Sgarzi, 2003). The news media considers the mass media to be one of the driving forces behind violence among our youth. They reference the Columbine shooting, Sandy Hook, the Colorado movie theater shooting, and the Virginia Tech massacre to show how mass media has influenced our youth to become more aggressive. Although most of these shootings occurred when the shooter was an adult, it is likely that most of the anger stemmed from their influence as a youth. The history channel stated, regarding the Columbine shooting, "It was speculated that the two committed the murders because they had been victims of bullying, were members of a group of social outcasts fascinated by gothic culture, or had been influenced by violent videos ". games and music” (Storia, 2014). These real-life situations have only reinforced the fact that violence in the media has a direct link to violence in the youth population. Although there is evidence demonstrating the connection between the media and child violence, others argue that violence in the media is not linked to violence in minors.
