Once he realizes that his bosses have other plans, he quickly abandons his Jewish acquaintances (Wiesel, 74). New male prisoners are beaten, forced to remove their clothes, beaten and sent to the barber to have their hair shaved. (Wiesel, 34) The German soldiers knew that what they were doing was wrong, but due to fear of the German government they never spoke out. At the beginning of the book the Jewish people were very supportive of each other, but as their lives but as the survival of individuals is at stake, they abandon each other. When many Jews faced death they began to protect themselves rather than help others. As time passes, many show the struggle between morality and selfishness. The first hint of the decline of morality
