Through many civilizations, one culture emerges as a dominant force that is seen as having the majority of power and influence. This dominant culture is able to influence subordinate cultures through its influential economic or political power, imposing its values, its language and its ways of behaving. This imposition leads to social barriers between different cultures, including racism and economic differences, as one culture is seen as superior to another. Throughout history, social barriers have been established all over the world; in America there were segregation laws and the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights activist, wrote the “I Have a Dream” speech during a time of segregation of blacks and whites in America. The speech addresses the issue of racism as a cultural barrier, which should bring equality and inclusion to all. In the poem “The Theme for English B” by Langston Hughes, the author discusses the influence of the dominant culture on a person of color in a school. In “The Theme for English B” the author of the poem talks about the dominant culture in the school setting from the perspective of a student of color. The black student believes that school segregation is a sign of dominant culture: “I went to school there, then in Durham, then here at this college on the hill above Harlem. I am the only black student in my class” (Hughes). The student feels isolated from the group due to his......middle of paper......rson of being more than one can imagine and this leads to acceptance and equality in cultures. In conclusion , race is an aspect of the dominant culture and constitutes a social barrier that can be broken down through the use of education. In the narrative poem “The Theme of English B” by Langston Hughes, he talks about social barriers in educational systems such as colleges. Race can bring people together and also keep groups apart as cultures as another culture is considered more superior to the other. To stop segregation and division between groups, education can be used to build a dominant culture that includes everyone because of what they are made of and not because of a person's race. Martin Luther King saw that race was a problem and believed that uniting cultures brought forth a solution to unite groups under one dominant culture of separation by social barriers.
