Post-secondary education has become the necessary gateway for young adults to enter skilled white-collar careers, with even some unskilled workers now requiring at least a two-year college degree, the need to have access to annual post-secondary raises. However, access to education has become a gateway to sometimes overwhelming student debt after graduation, which can take a lifetime to repay; even hindering the ability to achieve things like home ownership, the ability to access credit to start a small business or, in extreme cases, afford to leave the parental home. Governments have made great strides in improving the amount of funding available for students to attend college or university; they also cut the amount of funding given directly to institutions to offset operating costs, which in turn led to annual increases in tuition costs.
