Topic > Twilight: A Waste of Time and Money - 1045

In 2008, Twilight debuted in theaters across the county grossing a whopping $69,637,740 in its first weekend alone (imdb, 2008). Directed by Catherine Hardwicke, Twilight is a film based on the first in a series of four best-selling novels by Stephenie Meyer. The main focus of the film is on a teenager named Bella (Kristen Stewart) who moves from Phoenix, Arizona to the town of Forks, Washington to live with her father Charlie (Billy Burke). On her first day at school she meets Edward (Robert Pattinson), a mysterious boy who, as she discovers later in the film, is a vampire. After weeks of trying to stay away from Bella so as not to kill her, Edward finally gives in to his selfish desires and so, as the film's line goes, "the lion fell in love with the lamb." Then, as if the relationship between a vampire and a human wasn't already difficult enough, while playing baseball with Edward and his family, Bella becomes a tasty snack in the eyes of a clan of evil red-eyed vampires. After a failed attempt to hide Bella, Edward is forced to save her when James (Cam Gigandet), a member of the evil clan, lures Bella into his old dance studio to try to kill her. After hearing great reviews about the film, I decided to join the flock of enthusiastic fans at the nearest cinema to see what all the fuss was about. I'm still trying to figure it out. Expecting the film to have great actors, real vampires and decent special effects, I was extremely dissatisfied. At the end of his review in New York Magazine, David Edelstein states that "the most vivid thing in the film is Kristen Stewart" and that "she is better at conveying physical desire than any actor who plays vampires" (2008). Not sure which movie And... middle of paper... complete waste of time and money. I'm sure it will be for you too. I can't understand how it was one of the biggest hits of the year, nor how its popularity continued to grow as episodes of the Twilight Saga continued to emerge. Works Cited Corliss, R.
