Adopted by his great-uncle Julius Caesar, Augustus became ruler alongside Mark Antony and after Caesar's death, where together the two paved the way for a superior Roman Empire. During his leadership Augustus accomplished many things; one such example is its reconstruction and the extensive construction throughout the Roman Empire of temples and public baths. Augustus also held the Roman people very strictly to the law. “This is demonstrated through his daughter's exile after she broke her marriage vows in an act of adultery, which was decreed illegal under his rule.” Augustus was able to strengthen and expand Rome through these building projects and laws, benefiting the empire both during and after his reign. As he himself once said “I found Rome a city of bricks and I left it a city of marble. A second influential emperor who helped increase Roman land was Trajan, born Marcus Ulpius Traianus in 98 BC “Known as a benevolent ruler, his reign was notable for public projects that benefited the population, such as improving the dilapidated road system, the construction of aqueducts, the construction of public bathrooms and the expansion of the port of Ostia”. By building these buildings Trajan managed to improve the life of the Roman people. Similarly to Augustus, by adding advanced constructions to Roman cities, he managed to improve the quality of life in Rome, making it a thriving civilization and an exceptional place to reside.
