Pamuk argues that the ideas of freedom of thought and expression are universal rights that must be recognized by all people, and that limiting these rights is degrading and dehumanizing to individuals of any culture. The degradation and dehumanization of human beings against each other – human beings with skin color, religion, homeland, etc. similar or different – in the modern world this is why freedom of speech and expression is so important; “we need it to understand ourselves, our dark, contradictory inner thoughts, and the pride and shame” that human beings possess. (Pamuk “Freedom to Write”) Pamuk's diction in “Freedom to Dark exposes an alternative side of human behavior, while at the same time illuminating the role that language plays in characterizing individuals with similar or different backgrounds and in labeling different cultures . Language casts a critical lens on parts of the world that society will never see, and while language can distinguish one culture from another, language serves to create acceptance and tolerance of others within.
