The Caspian Sea borders Iran to the north. Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan also border the Caspian Sea. Since the Caspian Sea is the largest lake in the world, it is one of the most important land features of Iran. The capital of Iran is Tehran, which is located in the same location as the volcanic cone called Mount Damavand. The Zagros mountain range runs along the eastern border of the Persian Gulf. This mountain range continues into Pakistan. The Iranian plateau is a desert environment. In the desert parts of the country, the climate is mostly dry and arid. The days are warm and the nights cool. The Zagros Mountains, however, are quite different. The high altitude causes lower temperatures in the summer but difficult conditions in the winter months.
