Most humans use some form of effective listening strategy during every conversation they engage in. On the one hand it is correct to say that all human beings achieve knowledge by employing effective listening strategies; however, not everyone gets insights from the same strategies. Regardless of what culture you come from, to gain insights from conversations, you need to research and apply the fundamentals of a list of effective listening strategies. One of the most common lists of listening strategies seems to be focused on corporate listeners. “The human brain is built for conversation, but we get better results when we think strategically about listening and make some simple, deliberate choices that support our conversation goals (Business, 2005).” There are two main steps to help you be more effective in every conversation you face. “The first step is to decide what your goals are for every single conversation you are about to have (Business, 2005).” Planning this step in advance will help classify the conversation. “The second step requires you to be aware of your options and, with your conversation goal in mind, deliberately choose whether to speak or listen, focus or clarify what you want to say, or listen carefully. This step will further structure the conversation from the information gained from the first step. Each step is critical for generating the most information from everyday conversations, and each step has many other functions.
