Would you ever do anything with honor to protect those you love? Well, a man in John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" did just that. The book is about a man and his two sons who decide to go to California during the Dust Bowl. The man tries to buy bread for 10 cents through Mae, but the waitress refuses to sell him the bread because it costs 15 cents instead of 10. Since he is on a limited budget, he uses his insistent and unyielding humility to change her behavior towards him. One of the sentences that shows the man's humility is: "The man took off his dark, stained hat and stood with a curious humility before the screen." This shows that the man enters the restaurant feeling embarrassed because he and his family are poor. The man approaches the waitress and asks her politely, "Could you see a way to sell us a beaded loaf, ma'am?" What the man is trying to do here is buy a load of bread to which the waitress rudely and sarcastically responds with, "This is not a grocery store. We have bread to make san'widges."
