In 2009, Burger King released a new commercial for its collection of bizarre fast food ads. Prior to this, most of their sexually appealing shots were aimed at an older audience. The “Spongebob Got Back” commercial, however, advertised the 99 cent kids meal. The commercial broadcast on television has a longer version on YouTube. It starts with the screen centered on the Burger King, with three women behind him in brown shorts, a white shirt, and socks to match Spongebob's attire. They start a remix of Sir-Mix-a-Lot's "Baby got Back" that begins, "I like square butts and I can't lie." Soon, the three dancers have their backs to the camera with what appear to be phone books in their pants, wiggling their butts. A woman in a short red dress appears and her rear ends are quickly measured, as are those of the other women in subsequent scenes. The rest of the commercial consists of women dancing in a sexual manner and even bending over with their butts in front of the camera. Meanwhile, the king walks around imitating a rapper and attempting different dance moves and Spongebob and his underwater characters dance inside a television in the background. In many cases, it hits a female's back or points at her. At the end of the satire, the king holds up a paper bag with Spongebob and Patrick smiling on it, and the 99 cent kids' meal is announced. Although the short version of the commercial debuted at a men's basketball game, it later found its way into cartoon programs on Nickelodeon. The "Spongebob Got Back" commercial objectifies women by promoting sexual behavior, which leads to desensitizing youth to physicality and street slang. The advert taps into men's need for domination...... middle of paper......g rubbish food with women dancing is quite inappropriate and advertising a children's meal in a sexist way that evokes sexual behavior is the main reason why this commercial was banned, but is still visible to anyone on the internet. Although inappropriate, this commercial says a lot about how society views women as objects, turning the image of a children's cartoon on its head.
