Topic > Case Study on Multiculturalism in Canada - 1012

This was the first time multiculturalism was recognized in the Canadian Constitution. This is the second most important government policy because it makes it more rooted in the laws and history of Canada and enacts laws against discrimination of the separate cultures that make up the Canadian population. The Constitutional Law of 1982 states: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person and has the right not to be deprived of them except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice”. The quote shows that this chapter of the Constitution was very important as a social aspect of advancing multiculturalism. It changed not only how cultures got along with each other, but also how they were viewed as a whole. The act made discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, sex, age, or mental or physical disability constitutionally illegal. In the same video of the Ukrainian immigrant who owns a small shop in Winnipeg, it shows the discrimination that Ukrainians face when passers-by enter his shop. In the video he says that people don't see him as a "Canadian", but he has lived in Canada most of his life and is as Canadian as the people who tell him so. The Chapter of Rights and Freedoms is one of the most important multicultural social laws because it states that men, women and children like the shop owner are known as Canadians and have the same rights as anyone else
