One reason is that there has been an increase in the population of newcomers simply because of their hardiness and pride. People, regardless of religion, gender, age, or cultural and ethnic background, have a part of themselves with others. In other words, the newcomers had arrogance just like the old residents of Canarsie. Continuing on DeSena and Shortwell's book, the book describes that "the way West Indians and their children frame race may change as the time they spend in the [Canares] grows...the more their understanding of racism becomes fits that of other African Americans" (DeSena and Shortwell). and Shortwell 384). To take into account the historical period, racial superiority oppressed the inferior race with pain and suffering. The more you endure the pain and suffering, the less extreme the numbness you would feel and you would take precautions to stand. With threats and outbreaks of violence, the population of newcomers increased because they understood that they had to remain strong as a whole.
