The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 film written and directed by Frank Darabont. Andy Dufresne is a banker who is wrongly convicted of killing his wife and her lover. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences at Shawshank State Penitentiary. While Andy is serving his life sentence, he befriends some inmates, one of these men is Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding. Throughout the film Darabont influences the emotions of viewers by showing how a prisoner can restore hope and the effects of institutionalization. Institutionalization is a major theme in Shawshank Redeption. Institutionalization by definition means becoming part of a well-organized system and following a routine. Inmates follow a set routine and make no choices in life. After so long of being unable to make their own decisions, inmates may begin to lose the ability to make independent decisions.
