While observing a first grade lesson, I noticed that bullying occurs at an early age, which alarmed me. Some students were discussing how they didn't want to interact with a certain student because he was "gross" and "weird." The social determinant of health applicable to this situation is social isolation, as the victim of bullying is excluded and has a lack of social support among his or her peers. This may lead to education as a determinant of health as the student may avoid coming to school due to the experiences he has with his peers and considers his school environment to be unsafe. If these episodes continue throughout life, there is a possibility that the child will become depressed and may lead to suicide, as this is a phenomenon that occurs among students who are victims of bullying. An example of this case would be that of Amanda Todd, a woman who took her own life because she felt she had no social support. As a future healthcare professional, I will ensure that I treat people with mental health disorders with respect and empathy by educating myself on issues related to the provision of mental health care, raising awareness of other healthcare professionals and students through
