A finding in the literature verifies that 18% of the US population in a given year makes the US the most anxious nation in the world. Anxiety disorders are common among older adults, but less common than among younger people. Among adults, women are more likely than men to experience an anxiety disorder in their lifetime (National Institute of Mental Health, 2012). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, non-Hispanic blacks are 20% less likely and Hispanics are 30% less likely than non-Hispanic whites to experience an anxiety disorder in their lifetime (Gonzalez, William and Tarraf, 2010). Likewise, considering New York City's diverse population, anxiety has been a prevalent disease among older adults, affecting up to 10-20% of the elderly population, although it often goes undiagnosed.
