With so many patients to care for, downtime is minimal. Patients come with all kinds of ailments and nurses have to be very astute in treating them all. Typical nurses work 12 shifts from 7am to 7pm or 7pm to 7am. During that shift nurses perform many tasks. Some of these tasks include treating patients, dispensing medications, checking vital signs, creating charts, and other tasks assigned by the doctor. Nurses are sometimes referred to as mid-level workers in the medical field. Typically below registered nurses are Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). Additionally there are medical assistants and various clerks. Usually the above nurses are doctors, nurse managers, hospital administrators and professional nurses. Registered nurses are actually paid quite well. Most nurses average at least 50,000 a year, with many overtime opportunities that pay time and a half, so there are plenty of opportunities for additional income. Also because most nurses usually work their regular jobs only three days a week, some nurses also work additional shifts or work part-time in other hospitals or in the private sector.
