On Columbus Day, students across the nation will learn how Columbus discovered the New World and how he made his amazing voyages to the New World. On this day children will learn poems, stories, songs and nursery rhymes about his travels and himself. When introduced to Christopher Columbus as a young student, he is portrayed as a respectful gentleman and as a hero, when in reality he is a selfish man who takes advantage of inferior people and schools should teach their students who Christopher Columbus really was. presented to kindergarten or first grade students. Parents might even tell their children about Columbus' adventures before they go to primary school. According to elementary teachers, Columbus' goal in his travels was to find a shorter and faster way to trade with the Indies. Teachers will also say that he was the first to discover America, that he was a good person and that he treated Native Americans well. Some teachers will also say that Columbus undertook this voyage to prove that the world was round. If this continues with the information that teachers give to our students, our students will be misinformed and then they will spread their knowledge of Christopher Columbus to other people and therefore they will be misinformed too. ¬¬¬Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in what is now Italy. When he was an adult, he married Filipa Moniz Perestrelo and together they had two children, their names are Diego and Fernando. He had three brothers and one sister. At a young age he sailed to the Greek island of Chios and in later years made voyages to West Africa and had a growing interest in taking a voyage across the Atl...... middle of paper ...... discovered the New World was in fact the Vikings who got lost returning to their homeland and were the first from Europe to discover America and the New World.
