Topic > Developmental Milestones the First Year of Life

When a baby is born, it brings parents a lot of joy and excitement. When children come into the world, they are helpless human beings who depend on others to survive. A child will thus be dependent on his caregiver to learn and develop. However, milestones are things that some children do at that age; not all children will reach these milestones. Children are individuals and should be considered as such. The author of a story from News Bank Access World News states, “Nothing can replace contacting your pediatrician if you have questions or concerns, but the following can help you identify and nurture specific developmental milestones” (Diana, 2011).Child's Sensory Experiences at Birth Your baby's sensory experiences at birth are more acute than some people might think. At birth a baby can practically hear, unless there is something wrong with his hearing; it will improve as the child grows and develops. At such a young age babies can distinctly distinguish who their mother is from other mothers. When a baby is born the sense of taste will fully develop over time; however, at birth the baby will prefer sweetness to any other taste. The text states: “First, vision is probably the least developed of the child's senses” (Lefrançois, 2012). A newborn's vision may appear a little blurry, but he sees well enough for being in a woman's womb, for example he can see shadows and figures of people. Development and evolution of the senses In the next few months the baby will grow and develop so much that Every day will be filled with jaw-dropping excitement. Newborns' hearing will become more defined, but will still need further development to reach the full range of hearing. In the text the author ...... middle of paper ...... for various needs, such as hunger, pain or tiredness. He babbles with inflections and uses exclamations, including “uh-oh!”” (Diana, 2011) Conclusion The first year of a baby's life is so touching and full of heartfelt smiles. They grow and develop at just the right speed which is so amazing to watch and encourage them to continue their development. While you, as a parent, want your child to reach these milestones at the appropriate age, parents need to remember that all children develop at different rates. Milestones are simply information intended for parents and other personal persons to monitor a child's development and growth. Works CitedDiana, B. (2011, March 23).
