Patient education is an important element of nursing practice and its purpose is to increase clients' competence and confidence for self-management (Falvo, 2011). To educate the patient about a newly diagnosed condition, it is important for nurses to first construct an effective lesson plan. The scenario of Mr. Singh's newly diagnosed hypertension in Part A is used as an example of a successful teaching plan. The purpose of the following essay is to explain and justify the content of the lesson plan. Each section of the plan will be discussed in the order in Part A, with effective use of academic literature. Before the start of an educational session, it is important to assess both clients for changes they may affect (2014), older adults tend to be more focused and better able to ignore distractions in the morning than in the afternoon, therefore the session was booked for 9:00am The location of the educational session is the home of Mr. and Mrs. Singh. It is now well known that home is the place where the best teaching and learning takes place. The home environment is usually less distracting than the hospital where people come in and out of rooms and it is much calmer and quieter at home, with better lighting and therefore easier to concentrate (Boulton-Lewis, 2010). Additionally, this is a place where the majority of self-monitoring and treatment will occur. Additionally, because nurses make a couple of visits to the patient's home, they can observe Mr. Singh's progress after he has had time to practice the blood pressure machine technique and check that he is taking his medications regularly. During the first home visit, the nurse discussed with Mr and Mrs Singh an appropriate location for education and they agreed that their home was the ideal location because this way they would not have to travel far and therefore would felt less anxious the night before. During the first visit, the nurse also determined what educational materials Mr. and Mrs. Singh are looking for, whether they have Internet access and are able to use it so that all the materials the nurse brings them are easily
