Topic > Compare and Contrast The Great Gatsby and Romeo and Juliet

Essay 4: Comparative Analysis of Two TextsWhen comparing two texts, one must look at the characters and themes to find similarities and differences and we see a similarity with the theme of acceptance reality in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and in the great Gatsby. There are differences in both texts in how the characters fight reality, but the outcome is the same. The power of love in both texts is considered more important than social priorities and the main characters will do anything to get what they want and the result will be death. One might come to the conclusion that F. Scott Fitzgerald based Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan's relationship on Romeo and Juliet since both stories have characters who do not accept the relationship. In the classic romantic tale The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, the main characters Romeo and Juliet are deeply in love with each other, but from the beginning of the play we know that they could never be together due to family disputes. When you read the prologue, it says "Two families, both alike in dignity, from the ancient breaking of rancor to the new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean" (Shakespeare Prologue.1-4). Before the show even begins, we know how much these families hate each other and that blood is involved in a bad ending for everyone. Romeo comes from the Montagues and Juliet from the Capulets. These two families were at war with each other since the beginning of the story and these family disputes play a huge role in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo has an unbreakable passion for love and will do anything to get who he wants, regardless of the consequences that may follow. An example of this is that a young girl, like Juliet, may be hypnotized by the idea of love and have the thought in her head that love is all that matters. The intensity of love in both of these lyrics becomes a dangerous and violent thing. Juliet suffers physical pain by stabbing herself so she can be with Romeo after his death. Juliet sees death as a positive thing because it allows her to be with Romeo again. Before killing himself he says: “O happy dagger, this is your sheath. There rust and let me die” (Shakespeare V.iii.174-175). In most romantic tales, violence is the last thing you would think of when it comes to love, but in this comedy it would be different. In both of these lyrics we see love destroying people mentally and physically; instead of bringing happiness into their lives. When Juliet notices that Romeo drank poison and committed suicide, she was not only shocked by his death, but seemed even more upset that he “left no friendly drop to help me after!” I will kiss your lips. Perhaps some poison still hangs upon them” (Shakespeare V.iii.168-170). This seemingly unbreakable bond between them causes more damage than it would if they were not together as society would like them to be. During this time, in the 16th century, parents used to arrange marriages, so this goes completely against society
