Self-awareness is the main theme present in all three novels, Frankenstein, Flowers for Algernon and A Clockwork Orange. All four characters, Charlie, Alex, Victor and the monster are self-aware. Alex's awareness is revealed on the first page of the novel when Alex says, "What will it be then, huh?" (Burgess 1). In Flowers for Algernon, Charlie's conscience is shown through his written progress reports. In Frankenstein, the monster sees his reflection in the water and understands why the villagers rejected him. Victor's consciousness is tied to the creation of the monster; creates a grotesque monster. All four characters express self-awareness in similar ways. For starters, Alex is one of four characters who reveals self-awareness in general. Alex begins by stating, “What will be then, huh” (Burgess 1).
