Prophylactic antibiotics are “using antibiotics to protect yourself from or prevent the spread or occurrence of disease or infection.” This is a paradoxical facade presented to us by most of the medical world, the livestock and animal agriculture industry, and Fortune 500 companies (Prophylaxis). Prophylactic antibiotics kill tens of thousands of people every year; approximately 23,000 people had deaths related to antibiotic prophylaxis last year alone and are suspected of significantly contributing to the progression of superbugs (2013 Threat Report). Superbugs, or antibiotic-resistant bacteria, are one of the most likely outcomes of antibiotic prophylaxis, superbugs are a silent crisis that people around the world should be aware of, considering that it could and will affect us if we do nothing to prevent them them (Dennis and Vastag). There are many simple and cost-effective ways to prevent the creation of superbugs and reduce the number of disease- and contagion-related deaths each year around the world. The most effective way to do this is to ban the prophylactic use of antibiotics in animal feed and use them among humans only after major surgery or in places where there have been recent outbreaks of MRSA or other similar infections. This could not only potentially prevent thousands of deaths each year, but also increase and maintain the strength, integrity and effectiveness of our antibiotics against known threatening or harmful bacteria. There are many simple alternative solutions to the use of prophylactic antibiotics that could save money and lives, and if we do not choose to employ them and follow through soon, the problem at hand will become virtually impossible to stop and will quickly become a critical threat to everyone . in the p...... in the center of the sheet ......
