Animals are subjected to inhumane treatment by many individuals, yet little is done to protect them from this form of physical and negligent treatment. While there are several laws against this type of conduct, much animal abuse is unexpected and these animals are victims who cannot protect themselves. New York state describes the crime of animal cruelty as “the serious injury or killing of an animal without just cause” (Iannacone 2011). However, individuals are often not punished severely for their crimes against animals. There are numerous reasons why individuals are cruel to animals, ranging from: unintentional ignorance, personal gain such as money or food, neglect, personal satisfaction, etc. However, many individuals are unaware of other forms of animal cruelty in which they condone on a daily basis by participating in their daily activities such as eating meals, purchasing and using beauty products, and wearing certain items of clothing. Less aware forms of animal cruelty are those who suffer abuse for the purposes of medical research or who have cosmetic products tested on them that are harmful to their health. However, those who intentionally abuse and exploit animals are the individuals who should be punished by law. People who are openly violent towards other humans are more likely to engage in cruel behavior towards animals as well. Deliberate animal abuse, such as knowingly harming an animal in an inhumane form for personal satisfaction or engaging in activities such as hunting, dog fighting, or intentional abuse are all forms of animal cruelty. People who are violent towards others are more likely to engage in this form... half of the paper... the study is to find out whether individuals who are violent towards people are more likely to be cruel towards animals also. I believe that people who are violent towards other humans are also more likely to mistreat animals in ways that cause harm or death. By carrying out a survey and asking questions that do not directly refer to consciously violent behavior and using the Likert scale to see if an individual is more or less inclined to carry out certain behaviors, I will be able to conclude whether or not there is violence against of animals and people we draw a parallel between them.Works CitedIannacone, Stephen. 2011. “Animal Cruelty Laws in New York.” Pace Law Review 31(2):748-770.Taylor, Nicola and Tania D.
