Topic > John Walker Lindh: The American Taliban - 1253

John Walker Lindh, an American citizen referred to as "the American Taliban", left the United States to receive military training in enemy combat. Upon his departure from the United States, he received the discipline necessary to join the Afghan army. These Afghans were responsible for recruiting Muslims to fight against the Northern Alliance in the Afghan civil war. After training and fighting with a Taliban group based in Afghanistan, the end result ended in John Walker Lindh being captured as an enemy and returned to his homeland. It was during this time that he appeared before the American justice system to face charges ranging from material support to conspiracy against citizens of the United States (America's 2011). The American citizen who became known as a national symbol of anti-Americanism was an unsuspecting 20-year-old young man from San Anselmo, California, who became interested in Islam and began preparing for his life choice at the age of 12. As a preteen, John learned about the story of Malcom X, the African-American black Muslim leader. At the age of 16 he became Muslim and even began to dress in the djellaba, which is a type of loose cloak with an attached hood worn by inhabitants of North Africa and the Middle East, especially males. It was in this period of his young life that he studied and then converted to the Muslim faith, completely forgetting the Catholic beliefs on which he had once based his morals; furthermore, it was during this period that he learned Arabic so that he could read the Koran in its original language (Guerra 2014). It was July 1998 when John Walker Lindh's journey to Yemen began, where...... half of the document... the third two naval vessels in December 2001 and January 2002. In exchange, all other charges would be retreat. It has been speculated that the gag order was a request from Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (Orstein, 2004). With the plea agreement agreed upon by all parties involved, the government applied the Son of Sam law and made it abundantly clear that if Lindh attempted to make any kind of profit from his story, any earnings made from book deals or any type of film about his experience would automatically go into the federal government's bank account. This included Lindh himself, his family, his relatives, his associates and even his friends. Currently serving his 20 year term with no possibility of early parole, John Walker Lindh is incarcerated in the Federal Correctional Complex, located in Terre Haute (FCC Terre Haute) Indiana.
